Replacing the screen on a Dell Inspiron 2200

Close the laptop up and locate the two screws on the back near the corners, marked 'D' (for Display)

Remove these, then find two more screws, this time on the bottom of the

laptop (you can just see one of them in the above picture), and remove them.

Keep the screws safe, noting that the two from the bottom are a bit longer than the other two.

Next locate one of the hinge covers and slide in something into the slot in the centre (preferably plastic, but a screwdriver will do if it is almost the length of the little slot - otherwise you may make a small dent in the plastic, like in this example!)

and gently prise it up a couple of mm until
there is a gap

Now gently turn the laptop onto its base and open up the screen lid, moving it quite a way back, but

remembering that it is no longer fixed in place by the screws you just removed! (It will stay in place because of the hinge posts)

Next, insert a thin screwdriver or knife blade into the right-hand end of the control strip, and gently pull the strip up

It should come away completely and you can then just put it to one side.

It may feel a bit awkward to remove, just remember you can use a small amount of force - but not too much!

With the control strip out of the way, lift the back end of the keyboard.....

and lay it gently on its back on the palmrest.

(You could remove it altogether, but it means unfastening the connector where the ribbon cable goes onto the motherboard, and it's a bit fiddly to put it back if you haven't done it before.)

Now there are five small silver screws to remove from the metal shield on the left-hand side.

Number five also holds in a small earthing wire, so be careful (usually the screw will stay in the little ring on the end of the wire, but just make sure it doesn't come out and fall into the laptop!!)

Then lift the shield out and put it to one side

This is the fiddliest bit (assuming your laptop has a wireless card, that is)

Gently pull the tiny gold connector from the little socket on the wireless card

And then pull the black video cable from its connector on the motherboard.

This is the cable that takes the signal to the screen. You may have to give it a bit of a tug, but it will come away fairly easily - just don't yank it too hard!!

Move these two cables (The thick-ish black one and the thin white one) and gently pull them out of any guides they are lying in (note that they have to go back into these guides later on)

Then you are ready to lift the screen off. Just take hold of it by both sides and lift it gently (maybe rocking it slightly if need be until the hinges free up)

From now on, it's a reversal of what you have just done.

Put the new screen hinge posts into the holes and let them settle down.

Then replace the connectors and re-seat the cables into their guides.

(The black one should go on quite easily - make sure it's pushed all the way down.)

(The black cable must be correctly settled in the guide in the middle of this picture otherwise the keyboard will not lay flat when replaced.)

Replace the connector on the wireless card - as I said this can be a bit fiddly, but it has to be exactly central on its little socket, and be pressed down (probable with the aid of a small screwdriver) until it is properly clipped in place.

(There may be two connectors on your wireless card, but for laptops with only one aerial cable, use the one marked 'Main')

Now replace the metal shield and the five screws

Then turn the keyboard back over and lay it in place,

**making sure the little tabs along the bottom go just underneath the edge of the palmrest to hold it in place.**

Replace the control strip, starting at the left-hand side, where the tab on the

lower side needs to go just under the edge of the laptop body. Then gently press the strip in place along its length, making sure it's settled properly......

and then gently close the screen lid and press the hinge covers back into place.

Replace the 4 screws that you took out at first, and the job is done!!
